Ian Wright’s Tottenham comment comes back to haunt him after Arsenal crumble in title race

Next up for Tottenham Hotspur is the small matter of the north London derby against Arsenal.

Spurs themselves have top-four football to play for, but they can also further dent their rivals’ Premier League title chances.

But it’s not going to be easy, mainly because Ange Postecoglou is watching his team shoot themselves in the foot.

That was proven during Tottenham’s defeat against Newcastle on Saturday and now they have a few weeks to dwell on that because they play Arsenal on April 28.

Mikel Arteta’s side aren’t the only title-chasing team Spurs will be playing before the season comes to an end.

They will have a huge say on the Premier League title race as a whole, with games against Manchester City and Liverpool also on the horizon.

Michael Owen muted that on Sunday, just before Arsenal’s defeat to Aston Villa, and how they are going to have ‘such a huge say’, as he told Premier League Productions (14/04/24 1:10 pm).

But that’s when Ian Wright interrupted and proceeded to make a comment that has since come back to bite him in the back.

The former striker stated that ‘hopefully, Tottenham are going to play like they did against Newcastle’ when they face Arsenal.

Only for his own team to crumble in the title race by failing to turn up hours later and get outclassed by their former manager Unai Emery and Aston Villa.

Tottenham v Arsenal

“I tell you what, one thing we haven’t mentioned about those top three (Man City, Liverpool and Arsenal’s remaining fixtures) is Tottenham, they play all three,” said Owen.

Wright then interrupted and laughed: “Hopefully, they are going to play like they did against Newcastle.”

Owen added: “They are going to have such a huge say in the title race. They have lots to play for (top four). They are playing in a north London derby against Arsenal.”

Tottenham and Arsenal pressure

You could argue that the pressure will be on Arsenal for this fixture because they are going for the biggest prize.

But, whilst Spurs don’t play for a few weeks, their neighbours have two Premier League games against Wolves and Chelsea.

If Arteta’s side continue to struggle in those matches, then the title race will well and truly be slipping away from them by the time the NLD comes about, which would suit Tottenham and they could end it.

But, equally, if Arsenal win those matches, they will be sitting top of the table heading into that game and the last thing Spurs want to see is their rivals securing three points and then going on to become champions of England.
