Matty Cash was Forest's player of the year as they narrowly missed out on the Championship play-offs last season

Aston Villa have signed right-back Matty Cash from Nottingham Forest for about £16m on a five-year contract.

The 23-year-old Englishman came through the Championship side's academy and made 141 appearances for the club.

Cash boosts Villa's defensive options after only relegated Norwich City conceded more Premier League goals than Dean Smith's side last season.

The West Midlands club also hope to sign Bournemouth's England striker Callum Wilson.

Villa, who avoided relegation on the final day of last season, host Sheffield United on 20 September in their opening league game of the 2020-21 campaign.

Smith described Cash as "one of England's brightest young prospects", adding: "He has an excellent playing record for a young player and we believe he will settle in easily and continue his rapid development into a top full-back."

Cash, who began his career as a right-winger before dropping into a deeper role, says he has "always dreamed" of playing in the Premier League.

    Villa fan in a family of Reds.. Ive watched Cash progress over the years & he's been quality for Forest over the past season. Can he now step up to PL & perform ? I think so. Remember that was also a question being asked of Grealish

    A good move for the lad. He deserves it though as a Forest fan I'll be sad to see him go. He'll be much better signing for Villa than the last player we sold there who was more interested in his hair than his football. Good luck, Matty!

    Don’t forget the top 6 have dibs on the world’s best players. The rest of us have to gamble on talented young players from various leagues and hope they come good. Give him a couple of years before deciding this was a good deal or not.

    Matty won't let you down, he can defend, go forward and score goals. Forest are now a "selling" club, it's a tragedy but that's how it is. The thing I must add is that parachute payments will be the destruction of English football.

      Forest were a selling club under Fawaz. The owner now Mr Marinakis is actually a businessman who does not take the first offer, and the club has a good team dealing with the everyday running of the club.

    I have to say reading most of the comments here. that a large percentage of you dont seem to know Matty Cash is. or making cheap jokes that fall very flat. One of the best players in the championship last season, and deserves this chance. Though I wish it had been in the garibaldi.

    Good bye and good luck Matty. You can defend, create chances and score goals. You only left us because of the crazy parachute payments. This system prevents failed clubs who only bought their to the top flight from being caught out. We are witnessing a Ponzi scheme.

    Some complain when a lad is brought up from the championship questioning if he will be good enough.

    How can this be questioned. If a lad is a top player for a championship side id sooner have him in my squad than a bench warmer from France or Spain who hasn't kicked a ball competitively in months.

    The step up isn't always huge look at well the lads at sheff Utd done.

    Could be great business

    Good luck Matty. Great lad, always 100%, will be an asset in any team. Broke his leg at Villa very early in his career - carried on for 20 minutes before he went off. Nuff said. Always welcome at the CG. Look after him AVFC

    Haven't seen the lad play so watched a you tube reel of him this morning. Gets his foot in and likes to go forward, the right sort of profile so I welcome him to Villa, now a couple more, preferably upfront please! UTV
