Chelsea close WSL gap with 8-0 win; Reiten: 'We can do anything'

Chelsea close WSL gap with 8-0 win; Reiten: 'We can do anything'

Guro Reiten say Chelsea are capable of achieving "anything" after bridging the goal difference gap at the top of the Women's Super League with an 8-0 win over Bristol City.

Emma Hayes appeared to concede the WSL title race was all but over for her side after Wednesday's loss to Liverpool, but leaders Manchester City's late defeat to Arsenal on Sunday coupled with Chelsea'a emphatic win left proceedings finely poised at the league summit.

Chelsea trail City by three points but have a game in hand and now boast a marginally superior goal difference (+46 vs +45) after Sunday's win.

Winger Reiten scored four goals, Aggie Beaver-Jones was on the scoresheet twice, and Sjoeke Nusken and Niamh Charles each netted once.

"Today’s been a good day for us with the result before we started," Reiten told Sky Sports. "We fought for every goal. Two games to go, it’s going to be fun.

"We’ve been in so many situations this is a new one for us, we have to chase goals. But we can do anything."

Elliott and Salah boost Reds, more questions for Spurs

Liverpool thrash Tottenham

Liverpool won a high-scoring game against Tottenham as Jurgen Klopp’s Premier League farewell tour edges closer to its end.

Goals from Mohamed Salah, Andrew Robertson, Cody Gakpo and a stunner from Harvey Elliot gave the Reds a 4-0 lead that their performance had more than warranted.

Spurs improved greatly after a raft of substitutions, and scored through Richarlison and Son Heung-min, but in truth it was for the most part another underwhelming showing from Ange Postecoglou’s team.

Nuno questions Forest appeal verdict timing amid Burnley's survival bid

Nuno Espirito Santo has questioned why the Premier League has allowed a situation to develop where Burnley could effectively be relegated without kicking a ball this week.

Nottingham Forest expect to discover whether their appeal over a four-point sanction for breaching profitability and sustainability regulations (PSR) after Monday, May 6.

If Nuno’s side are given back even a single point it would mean Burnley’s return to the Championship would be all but confirmed — barring an unlikely goal difference swing of 17 in their final two matches — by a decision made over a desk, rather than on the pitch.

Forest are hopeful that their own survival hopes will be bolstered by a positive verdict to their appeal hearing, which took place on Wednesday April 24.

But head coach Nuno has concerns that one of their relegation rivals could now have their fate confirmed in such a manner, after a delay in returning a verdict.

Maguire out for three weeks with muscle injury

Harry Maguire is expected to miss the remainder of the Premier League season after being ruled out for around three weeks with a muscle injury sustained in training.

The England international, 31, has a chance of returning for the FA Cup final against Manchester City and is expected to fully recover in time for this summer’s European Championship, which begins in Germany on June 14.

He is set to miss Manchester United’s final four matches of the Premier League season against Crystal Palace, Arsenal, Newcastle United and Brighton. United conclude the season with the FA Cup final at Wembley on May 25, facing rivals City in a repeat of last season’s final.

Maguire's absence adds to United's defensive injury list, with Raphael Varane, Lisandro Martinez, Victor Lindelof, Luke Shaw, Willy Kambwala, Jonny Evans and Tyrell Malacia all sidelined. Evans is in contention to return against Palace on Monday after a month out, having returned to training this week.

United's extensive injury list has forced defensive midfielder Casemiro to deputise at centre-back alongside Maguire in recent weeks.

Moyes points to Rice sale after another heavy away defeat

David Moyes pointed to the loss of “best midfield player in the country” Declan Rice after another heavy away defeat for West Ham United, this time at Chelsea.

England international Rice left West Ham for Arsenal in a £105million transfer last summer and has gone on to play a key role in Mikel Arteta’s side’s title charge.

In the 25-year-old’s absence West Ham have often been vulnerable defensively, particularly on the road where they have lost nine of their 18 games, conceding 43 goals in the process.

That includes a 4-1 reverse at Aston Villa, a 5-0 defeat to Fulham and the 5-2 loss at Crystal Palace a fortnight ago.

Moyes' side lost 5-0 at Stamford Bridge on Sunday leaving their under-pressure manager to field more questions on how he can turn their form around.

Asked to explain the poor results away from home, Moyes said: "Declan Rice.

"When you’ve got the best midfield player in the country protecting, probably limiting 50 per cent of their attacks it makes you much a better defensive team.

"We’ve lacked protection in front of the back four, lacked good enough defending, not been good enough at those things in many games.”

Arsenal beat Man City in WSL as title race takes further twist

Arsenal scored two late goals as they came from behind to beat Manchester City 2-1 in the Women's Super League.

Jonas Eidevall's side had trailed 1-0 at half time to a Lauren Hemp strike, before Stina Blackstenius emerged from the bench to score in the 89th and 92nd minute.

The result leaves City six points clear of Chelsea, who have two games in hand, and means the title race could go down to goal difference on the final day of the season. It opens the door once more for Emma Hayes' side, after the Chelsea manager conceded the title was as good as gone following Wednesday's 4-3 loss to Liverpool.

"I thought it was a bit tough on us today," City head coach Gareth Taylor told the BBC. "We wanted to win the game today no doubt, and we wanted to be in control and we’ve lost a little bit of that.

"We’ve just tried to keep it simple by winning the game. I thought a draw was a fair result, losing was pretty tough on the girls."

Chelsea play relegated Bristol City at Kingsmeadow later today.

On whether he will be watching the Chelsea match later, Taylor added: "I get more nervous watching other teams play than when you're at a game (watching) ourselves... I'll see what's on the other channels!"

Suddenly Chelsea are an attractive team to watch, particularly at home.

The thrashing of woeful West Ham United piled more misery on manager David Moyes and made it 24 home goals in seven league games since the start of February.

Cole Palmer began the scoring in the 15th minute, his 21st of the season and 30th goal involvement in the Premier League, before captain Conor Gallagher doubled the lead on the half hour and Noni Madueke made it 3-0 six minutes later.

Nicolas Jackson added a fourth by finishing a brilliant team move three minutes after the restart and put the seal on things with a fifth ten minutes from time. Mauricio Pochettino’s team have won four successive games at Stamford Bridge and are now eyeing a place in Europe.

777’s latest legal scrape must surely mark the end of Everton takeover

777’s latest legal scrape must surely mark the end of Everton takeover

In trying to explain just how bad 777’s latest legal scrape is for the Miami-based investment firm, it is difficult to know where to start.

The complainant this time is London-based investment firm Leadenhall and the civil suit it has filed against 777 Partners, some of its portfolio companies, its co-owners Steven Pasko and Josh Wander, its close partner A-Cap and its boss Kenneth King runs to 82 pages. And there is a wounding zinger on each page.

But perhaps the easiest place to start is simply to say this must surely be the end of 777’s almost eight-month attempt to complete its purchase of Everton, and very possibly the end of 777, too.

Captain Virgil van Dijk is a fitness doubt for Liverpool’s Premier League clash with Tottenham at Anfield this afternoon.

The Dutch defender hasn’t trained since picked up a minor muscle injury in last Saturday’s 2-2 draw at West Ham.

Young full-back Conor Bradley is back in contention after recovering from an ankle problem but attacker Diogo Jota remains sidelined.

“Diogo is not in team training yet. Conor is,” confirmed manager Jurgen Klopp.

“Virgil wasn’t training the whole week yet, but probably part of team training later today. So we have to see what we can do with him from there.”

Silva starts for Chelsea against West Ham

Thiago Silva starts for Chelsea against West Ham United in what will be one of his final games for the club.

The Brazilian defender, who joined on a free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain in 2020, announced this week he will leave the club when his contract expires in June.

He had faced an anxious wait over a groin injury picked up against Aston Villa and he missed the win over Tottenham Hotspur on Thursday.

But the 39-year-old returns in what will be one of his final home games for the club.

Chelsea’s remaining matches include trips Nottingham Forest and Brighton & Hove Albion before they welcome Bournemouth to Stamford Bridge on the final day of the season.

Elsewhere, Raheem Sterling, Levi Colwill, Axel Disasi, Malo Gusto and Christopher Nkunku are all included on the bench.

Bayern Munich left-back Raphael Guerreiro will miss the Champions League semi-final second leg with Real Madrid with injury.

The Portugal international, 30, was forced off after just 17 minutes of the 3-1 Bundesliga defeat at Stuttgart on Saturday with Thomas Tuchel later revealing the defender needed crutches.

Bayern confirmed on Sunday that Guerreiro has suffered ligament and capsule damage to his ankle and will now miss "the next few matches".

Bayern head into Wednesday's game at the Santiago Bernabeu tied at 2-2.

Eric Dier was also taken off as a precaution with a head injury on Saturday while Leon Goretzka, Thomas Muller and Leroy Sane were among those rested.

Matthijs de Ligt, who missed the games with Real Madrid and Stuttgart with injury, trained individually on Sunday while Jamal Musiala, also subbed off with a knock on Saturday, completed the session.

Chelsea beating Spurs 'the best game' of the season - Pochettino

Chelsea beating Spurs 'the best game' of the season - Pochettino

Mauricio Pochettino says Chelsea’s performance in beating his former club Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge made him the happiest he has been all season.

Goals in each half from Trevoh Chalobah and Nicolas Jackson enabled Chelsea to do the Premier League double over their London rivals with a 2-0 home win and move up to eighth in the Premier League with four matches left to play.

After the match Pochettino praised the competitive spirit his players showed against Spurs, in marked contrast to manner in which he felt they “gave up” in a 5-0 defeat to Arsenal last month.

"I think for me, it is the best game,” Pochettino said. “Maybe I don't know if it's the best game but it is the most happy I've been after. In the way that we play, the way we compete, that is what we wanted from the beginning of the season, what we want to apply to the team.

"We were so competitive. In this way, we can grow, we can do better and we can improve in the areas.

Pochettino also singled out Noni Madueke for praise after the winger carried a constant threat from the right flank against Tottenham, the club where he spent the majority of his academy career.

"It is not easy to create a competitive group of players that can go to the pitch 100 per cent in their best form,” Chelsea’s head coach added. “In the last few weeks, we are trying to find this balance. People are starting to realise it is a process, the time that you need.

"Noni Madueke, for me, was unbelievable. If you analyse him from the start of the season; all the conversations and meetings, clips and videos, things like this.

"He was capable today of doing a fantastic job with the ball of course, he is an offensive player but without the ball he is doing a fantastic job helping Alfie (Gilchrist) defend. That is what we need for the future, to build this competitive spirit."

Nuno Espirito Santo warned that Nottingham Forest’s fight against relegation is not over yet — but feels they took a ‘big step’ forward with their 3-1 win over Sheffield United.

Callum Hudson-Odoi scored twice and Ryan Yates netted his first Premier League goal, as Forest came back from behind to secure three precious points, after ex-Red Ben Brereton had initially put the home side ahead from the penalty spot at Bramall Lane.

Victory left Forest three points clear of 18th placed Luton, with two games left to play this season. While 19th placed Burnley now trail Nuno’s side by five points, following their 4-1 defeat by Newcastle.

Forest are waiting to hear if a Premier League appeal hearing verdict will see them given back any points, after they were initially docked four points for breaching profit and sustainability regulations in March. That is not expect to happen before Tuesday at the earliest.

“It is not over, it is a big step, but we still have two games to go. It was a very important step, but we still have to prepare, because this is not over. We still have two hard games to play,” said Nuno.

“The next one will be very important for us; it will be a big one at the City Ground. But this was a huge, huge win for us.”
